Itinerary Overview

  • Your journey begins upon arrival in Hargeisa, the vibrant capital of Somaliland. Meet your Horn Explore representative and start your day with a visit to the Hargeisa Livestock Market, one of the largest in East Africa. Experience the lively trade of camels, goats, and sheep — a true reflection of Somaliland’s culture and economy. Continue to the Money Market, where currency exchange happens in the open streets, showcasing a fascinating display of trust and tradition found nowhere else in the world. Next, explore the Hargeisa Cultural Centre, a peaceful space celebrating local art, literature, and heritage. Afterwards, walk through the famous Waaheen Market, filled with colors, scents, and sounds of daily Somali life. Visit the Independence Monument (MiG Jet) — a symbolic site honoring Somaliland’s freedom and remembering the 1988 tragedy that claimed many lives. In the afternoon, depart for Laas Geel, located about 50 km from Hargeisa. This archaeological wonder features rock shelters with ancient cave paintings estimated to be over 5,000 years old — some of the best-preserved in Africa.

  • After breakfast, depart from Hargeisa toward the historic port city of Berbera. Enjoy the scenic drive through the mountainous Sheikh Pass, one of Somaliland’s most breathtaking routes, offering panoramic views of the countryside and small rural villages along the way. Upon arrival in Berbera, begin your city exploration with a visit to the Old Ottoman Quarter, showcasing colorful 19th-century architecture that tells the story of Berbera’s trading past. Continue to the Berbera Fish Market, where local fishermen sell freshly caught seafood straight from the Gulf of Aden — a lively glimpse into everyday coastal life. Next, visit the Berbera Museum and the Old Port, learning about the city’s historical importance as a Red Sea trade hub. You will also have time to see the ancient mosques that still stand as symbols of Berbera’s Islamic heritage. Enjoy a traditional seafood lunch by the shore, followed by free time to relax on Berbera Beach, where golden sands meet the clear turquoise waters of the Gulf of Aden.
